299 allowing your hand to say what's in your heart

I'm of two minds where to take this post. On the one hand, I'm not sure I really have anything to add to our national conversation, and I have some interesting tablet news. (Well, interesting to me, at least.)

On the other hand, juicy screencraps, and a chance to bash on GWB43. So let's do both. Or maybe I'll get around to the tablet stuff tomorrow.

So we start here, with Colin Powell. He knows a thing or two about not standing up and telling the truth.

Man, I can only imagine what sort of projecting of my personal failings I do on a daily. I guess that would be an interesting experiment, to go back through my writing and see what it says about myself.

So if you've been following closely this "fascism in the USA" conversation, you probably know it really got rolling after we went on the attack after 9/11, fully twenty years ago now. Remember 9/11, when we invaded two countries? One which had zero ties to 9/11? And our secretary of defense stood up in front of the UN, and said, no, really, they're a scary threat? Yeah, that was this former general, repeating the big lie.

Since we're on the subject of retired military officers, this guy was a lieutenant colonel.
He must have thought that disguise was pretty good, but damn photos have a way of making the rounds these days.

And since this photo is being used as the main talking point that the rioters were in fact, terrorists looking for hostages, here's an oops:

Guess the guy is saying the same thing about the speaker's lectern.

And more...

I really admire what this guy has done to create a brand. I don't know if he's super well known yet, but he has some funny books that do well on Amazon.

And then there's this. We've known for a while that FB has the ability to program minds and overthrow governments. (Arab spring, anyone?)

Now, they're flexing that muscle here in the US. O44 spent a lot of time kissing up to Zuck. T45 spent a lot of time turning Twitter into something relevant again. Now, we're all living in that world, but getting to understand that a) it is not free speech, b) we just handed away our anonymity, and c) it can go very sideways.

Whatever happens, I'm sure mesh networks like Firechat and Signal will continue to gain popularity. (A mesh network uses bluetooth to send messages phone to phone across other people's phones.)

Ok, we're getting around to the tablet stuff, but first one chart. This is Tesla's stock price this year.

And now tablet news. It turns out, I'm part of a pretty big trend.

After several years of decline, the tablet market popped off this year. They're guessing it's all the staying at home, but Samsung doubled its sales.

And then one of my drawings actually made it into "top posts." This doesn't mean much, and it might just be an algorithm trick, but it's better than nothing.

But that's not all. I'm going to have to switch devices to finish, though.

So among my tutorial watching, I watched a video about some simple advice for breakthrough creative. And it gave a dumb, but maybe great way to figure out what you want to focus on. I've had the suspicion for many years that my dilletantism was perhaps getting in my way, but I've had a hard time picking any one thing to focus on.

Sometimes I get into a groove for a few years (movies 2001-09, musical 2010-15, books 2016-18) but nothing has exactly stuck. This isn't exactly a problem, but I do feel like my work would be best off if it had an audience, and it's likely my bopping around had gotten in the way of that.

The advice? Draw the same thing everyday.

Now, if you've seen my sutros, telephone wires, or sunrises, you know I'm kinda on that tip, somehow, already. But what about the three or four other productive hours of the day?

So I asked my hand and arm to get involved in the thinking, and out popped Miley McMeteor again. After this slide, I did some story thinking, and then realized, no, it's too soon. Just get to know the girl.

And maybe explore the possibilities a little. The rest will come along, sooner or later.

Stay tuned for more.
