344 rant accomplished

Still cleaning up. Need to do a blog post on the tablet, I've got a bunch of screencraps on there waiting. But there are still a few here on my phone, so that's where we are today.

The Marblehead experiment was a good one. I'm definitely missing the focus of writing on one topic. Yesterday I found myself wondering if I had the discipline to divide this blog up so that I write on a different topic everyday. So for example, we'd have Money Mondays, and Science Tuesdays or whatever. I'm not sure I do, but I'm pretty sure this endeavor wouldn't suffer if I moved away from my current scattershot approach.

On an average day, this blog gets about 25 views. Probably 5 of those are me. Back in the early days of the pandemic, it was more like 45. The most popular Marblehead post, the one about money, which I promoted on a Facebook group dedicated to my hometown of Hull, Mass, got close to 600 views. I shared about 5 or 6 of those posts to that group, two of them have gone over 400 views, and every post in the series has experienced a boost, I think the lowest seen is still in the 70s.

Of course, that might say more about my promotional effort than the content. Nah. People went for the money gossip. I don't have many stories like that in my back pocket, but I still think it is worth repeating.

It's nice to have outdoor dining back. The shackitecture has been reminding me of our early Gold Rush days, when the city was improvised. It's been especially inviting to think about Mark Twain's Barbary Coast Revue in this context. My hope is we'll find a way to put on the show in some way that will feel exciting and frontier this summer. So far, the reaction to the rewrite has been great. It will be awesome to be part of the city's rebirth.

In the meantime, other people are feeling the same way.

My young self might have seen this as an uh-oh moment. "There's a race!" But it's not. My mantra since really diving into a creative life has been, "It's not competition, it's company."

It's like when Burger King builds across from McDonald's. You'd think they're competing for fast food customers, but actually, they're creating a fast food destination.

Come to San Francisco and enjoy the arts!

The livestreamer I watched on January 6th was arrested. He was pro-Trump, but watching the livestream, I didn't have any problems with the guy, and I think the reports about him have painted him badly.

For instance, when he said the day was "epic" he was referring to the fact that he had 30k people watching his livestream, and had been picked up by a major network, not the fact that congress had been shut down. I think he saw himself as a legit reporter, not a rioter.

That's what his former boss had to say, though. Still, I appreciated his reporting.

File under: it's almost the weekend

File under: you don't get it

It's kinda nuts how people pick up on a progressive slogan and turn it into shit.

This is from a guy who started selling coffee beans out of his garage in the city. He has no fucking clue what "Think globally, act locally" means. The idea is you're supposed to think about the big picture of the world while you're going about your day-to-day business. In other words, how are your actions here effecting the big picture?

This guy seems to think it means something about globalization of marketplaces.

Alright, I'm back! Rant accomplished. Stay safe and see you tomorrow.
