352 gardening Saturday
I know I promised Gardening today, but can we take a minute to wrap our heads around that flu statistic from earlier this week?
The US had almost no flu this year. A couple hundred hospitalizations versus normally 400,000. Almost no deaths, compared to 20,000 last year.
At the same time, we had 500,000 Covid deaths. These are all tested and confirmed, it was Covid-19.
What does that say? I get two things.
First, we really did put effort into stopping the spread of viruses this year. Whether it's masks, or cancelling large events, or lockdowns, or keeping kids out of schools, I don't know, but we successfully shut down flu season.
Second, at the same time, Covid went fucking nuts. Which basically speaks to, duh, this is a crazy pandemic with a virus we have zero resistance to. It's out of control. It spreads like nuts. It's not a joke, a hoax, or fake news. It's the real deal, and fighting it is really hard.
And now, gardening.
Deb has a new installation going on, over in the Excelsior.
We recommended some options that would have recycled the materials from their old hardscape, namely tearing out the existing retaining walls and using the rubble to fill gabion boxes and make new retaining walls.
The clients didn't go for that, so there were quite a few dump runs, and now we're building some redwood timber hardscape features.
It's a work in progress, but from this point it will come together pretty quickly. Like so much, a lot of time and work has to go into preparation.
Getting the foundation level is critical.
Peace be with you.
