371 a tale of two trees

Bit of a grab bag today. Above is a photo of Al's Park. This is a paper street in our neighborhood that a guy turned into a garden years ago. I used to see him working in it, but haven't in years. It got pretty overgrown, then a house was built on a lot only accessible through the park, so it became a construction zone.

But apparently Al is still around, and turned 100 this weekend. It turns out he's lived two doors up from the park for 75 years! The things he's seen.

To mark his birthday, the neighborhood association organized a cleanup of the park. (Paid for by the house that got built... Not out of generosity, that was part of the agreement that let them build.)

So what did they do? See that tree with the "Al's Park" sign? For years, it was a sad little topped pine tree, with just it's lower branches.

To celebrate Al's birthday, they cut off all the living branches, so now it's a fifteen foot stump.

This is how it is in gardening. You set out to love plants, you wind up cutting them down.

On the other hand, this is a peach tree. When the house behind it was getting remodeled, they cut it down to the base. It wasn't on their property, but it was close to the ridiculous driveway they installed which no one will ever use, but gives the new owners a curb cut, aka, a dedicated parking place on our public streets.

It's now about five years later, and the peach tree is back, as a handsome bush. Since the house has already changed hands a couple times, and no one seems interested in doing anything outside the front door besides running to their car, it seems like the peach might be safe again for a while.

How much vacant office space do we have in SF?

14m square feet. Divided into 500sq ft apartments, that's 28,000 new units! Some with pretty awesome views!

Or, maybe we'll just stagger arrival times so that the elevators don't get too crowded. Oy, we love commuting.

I really think hustle and bustle makes some people feel like they're achieving something.

The garden we're working in right now has security cameras. A lot do, but I think this is the first installation we've done that's under camera the whole time. There's definitely a change in mood.

Wanna get a drink?

We can now. Only outdoors, though.

This is the best we can do? Take a flatscreen TV that "works great!" and toss it on the street? Have you not heard of Craigslist, Nextdoor, or Community Thrift?

Of course, I didn't bother picking it up. Who needs a crappy old TV?

Been getting back into making sushi recently, especially with roasted yam and almond cream cheese.
