460 mobile home makeover: the before pictures

It has the official HUD plate, so technically it's a "manufactured house." In this case, the manufacturer was a company called Guerdon just over the border in Idaho.

Stay tuned for more episodes, including the hopefully-not-too-exciting removal of several wasp nests.

Yikes!

619 generational pop propaganda

Image
As a Gen Xer, I’ve been sold a steady diet of Boomer crap since I was born. At this point, I know more about Boomer pop culture than I do Gen X pop culture. All the classics — the classic bands, the classic movies — everything from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s — that’s all Boomer shit. Gen X basically got one decade, the ’90s. Boomers have The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Monkees, The Kinks, The Who, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Michael Jackson, Wham!, The Cure, even R.E.M.  Gen X has Nirvana. And Beyoncé. The one place that Gen Xers have excelled is making tech billionaires. We have Sergey and Bezos, Musk, and Jack Dorsey — and a bunch of other guys, mostly guys. Boomers have, like, Larry Ellison, some Waltons who inherited stuff, some Mars people who inherited stuff, and I don’t know — is Bloomberg a Boomer? He might be older than a Boomer.  Millennials are doing all right on th...

614 martial law might not look like what you think

When martial law arrives, it might not look like what we think. Sometimes I like to remove the labels to see what might be really going on.  Our language has a strong control over our thoughts. How we see the world around us is "framed" by the language we use to describe it.  Language is coded with all of the good and bad of human culture: Euro-centrism and scarcity, equality and abundance. Which words we pick change our impression of the world we are witnessing.  "A missionary spreading the good news to unsaved souls" sounds a lot different than "a foreign cult leader poisoning innocent minds." But they're both describing the same thing. When we remove the labels, we might not see the truth, but maybe we get a bit closer. Or attempt to.  "An outsider attempting to convince a group that they're wrong and their right" is another way of describing the missionary's situation, but it removes the labels of religion and national...

620 How do we get our thoughts back?

Image
Forgive me, it's been a while. Not that there's nothing to say, just that I've been saying it other places.  The long nights of winter are perfect for setting one's mind to a novel. Sadly, the slow churning up there, or rather, the distracted tumbling, has watched winter turn to spring and said novel is maybe a third of the way. Maybe.  This is the battle in the attention economy. How do we get our thoughts back?  There have been several changes over here at Wake Blake galactic headquarters.  First, our entire information technology infrastructure was rebuilt (we got a new phone), leading to the usual (un)expected total loss of everything. So we have new graphics on the blog. Yes, they were created with an AI boost. Why? Because as bad as the AIpocalypse might be, it's fun to watch them hallucinate up new-ish stuff. Second, the publisher/editor/writer has taken up with the saints/scoundrels in o...
