462 back in a mask
So after a month of not wearing a mask at all, I went to Safeway in the city the other day and, because everyone else was, I wore a mask. Then at the farmer's market on Sunday, I also wore one. Not everyone was, and we were outside so it was probably not necessary, but enough people were and it's a minor inconvenience, so I pulled my bandana up. It was fine.
Also on Sunday, met up with a friend to walk dogs at Fort Funston. He mentioned his wife was sick. They had negative Covid tests the day before, so it was... Just a cold. Except she had a fever too.
Which I think puts her into the category of "why everyone has the worst summer cold ever."
The answer? We're out of practice fighting viruses.
So, there's that little ripple of the whole pandemic. Sure, we haven't been sick in a year, but wait till we are. Yikes.
Meanwhile the Delta variant continues to tear through the unvaccinated.
It's remarkable how super-safe San Francisco's chart still has the same curves as the rest of the US. Except, I think the current wave here is steeper than the rest of the country. It sure looks like once most of us have been protected, the rest are, well, "it's up to you, dude."
Now we're all a bit nervous about the flu. If this is what a cold is doing, what will the flu do?
I dunno, I imagine I'll be getting a shot and wearing a mask or whatever. It's weird, once I discovered the convenience of getting a shot and not getting sick, I've gotten a shot every year. In the long run, this may not help my immune system, and may contribute to dementia or Alzheimer's, but in the short term, I get a week back every February.
There have been some breakthrough clusters at nursing homes that has our friend who works at a nursing home in the city nervous. She got Covid last year, in the first wave. She's not interested in getting it again, but even more interested in protecting her clients.
Those numbers are old, but this spring you had a 3x greater chance of catching Covid in the city if you weren't vaccinated. I think a lot of that is pre-delta, though.
While we're not on the subject, how about a look at the who's and what's of the climate catastrophe. It turns out over population isn't such a big deal in terms of CO2. It's more about profligate lifestyles in the "first world." You know, flying and driving and consuming. You know, eco destinations.
Speaking of eco-minded consumption, how about those ebikes?
Supposedly up 145% from 2019 to 2020. Based on personal observation, most of those must have been in SF, because around here it looks like they're up 1000%.
Meanwhile, remember those container ships waiting to be unloaded. The US's largest brand of ebikes (founded in 2015 via Kickstarter) found a way around the delay.
And finally, how's my dogecoin investment doing?
Well, I managed to turn $600 into slightly less than $200. But I'm diamond hands. I won't pull out until I've totally lost track of the money...
