464 I'm glad you're still here
Well, well, well... It's been a while. What to talk about?
Half the screenshots I deleted were graphs charting the spread of Coronavirus. In the early summer, it was pretty quiet both here in SF and in eastern Washington State, where I was visiting.
Then, it started to pop off here. And, a few weeks later, there. Here, businesses faced another mask mandate, and patrons had to show proof of vaccination. And with vaccination rates above 75%, the cases quickly began to fall.
In Stevens County, with 40% vaccination, they went up and stayed up. As a result, I stayed out of restaurants.
Meanwhile, back in the city, it's party time. Mask-less. But all vaccinated.
But, also, in Stevens County, it's been party time the whole time, too. For some.
What's my takeaway? This stuff is hard. Traveling, I've been impressed by the number of masks I've seen. Many people took this pandemic at least somewhat seriously. That's good news.
One of the more disheartening aspects of SF's response was our whole "outdoor masking" debacle of Summer 2020, and our total commitment to not having any fun outdoors. From the moment I went to a 20,000 strong BLM march that was not a super spreader event, it was pretty obvious doing stuff outside, even among big groups, was safe. But we let a whole summer of the arts just go by.
Now, I'm looking at putting on a musical. Despite Delta (and Mu, the vaccine-resistant strain), shows seem to be happening again.
Theatre is notoriously on the older side of live events, will audiences turn up?
Let's just say, putting on a show is never a sure thing. And now...?
Remember those awesome few days with almost no car traffic?
Oh yes, we do!
Well, if you came here for deep thoughts, I'm sorry to disappoint. But I'm glad you're still here.
