508 The Flood, Ch. 21

Chapter Twenty-One

My head hurts, but not as bad as my shoulder, I realize as I try to sit up. The rising sun is shining in my eyes, and makes the splitting pain worse. Giving in to the pain, I slump back down to the...

Water?

Flowing downhill.

Dozer and Princess are on the stoop of our building a few feet away. Seeing me move, Princess comes over to lick my face.

"What is happening?" I ask, watching Dozer hang back on the stairs. He's always been afraid of water.

I've seen the street like this before, when a water main broke up the hill from us.

Rolling onto my side, I push myself up with my good arm.

There's nothing uphill out of the ordinary, except the empty street, and water streaming past us.

Downhill, is another picture. Nothing looks quite right. The skyline is somehow... off. There's something missing. And moving.

Where is the General Digital building? And...

The biggest skyscraper downtown falls. The Salesdream Tower. I blink. My head hurts, my eyes hurt, the sun, the pain, but no...

It's gone.

There's an odd sound, not a rumble, more like the wind, but with lots of pops and bangs.

In the next moment, I understand what is happening.
