521 The Flood, Ch. 34
Chapter Thirty-four
In all this time, one thought continued to bug me. 'Dive in to find a connection' was what the forked student Sonia said to me before she swam away into the depths.
I tried going for swims.
Swimming seemed like a good place to start, so for refreshment from the rescuing, salvaging, and rebuilding, I would take dips in Eureka Harbor. To make them a little more enjoyable, I began to build a natural rock pool on the shoreline, right about where our old building had stood.
On all these swims, I didn't see jack shit.
So I tried diving. Diving into the pool, diving off rocks. Cliff diving. Our new shoreline had some spectacular spots, but I was not connected to the internet, or to the enlightenment and knowledge of information I had seen during the flood. This was just fun in the water.
Nothing.
Gradually, we began to see signs of life from the mainland. One day, a helicopter buzzed the island. It didn't stop, there was no aid offered, but we knew there were people alive. Then a commerical jet flew high overhead.
Based on our new shoreline, I couldn't think of a single airport in the area that would be above water. All of the old harbors were gone, any boat that wasn't at sea destroyed.
Sunny's sister lives in the mountains, so I knew she was safe, but I hadn't heard from her. The internet and phones were down, but there was a ham radio operator on the island. She had news from all over the world -- it wasn't good -- but none from my wife.
And then I found a boat.
