525 The Flood, Ch. 37

Chapter Thirty-seven

At the top of the northernmost peak on our island is an old decommissioned Nike missile site. These bunkers were built to store nuclear missiles. The big idea was that if an incoming missile was detected, we could fire off a Nike missile to intercept it. They weren't very accurate, they just created a big explosion about thirty miles out to sea.

Thankfully, they were never used. The missiles were removed and the bunkers sealed up.

Now, decades later, I had an idea.

Normally, that's where my job ends. I'm the idea guy. If I wanted to implement an idea, I would hire an expert.

But despite some survivors on the island having pretty good technical skills, I decided to do this job myself. Partly to keep it secret, and partly because I now knew how.

I saw it in the flood.

So I found the old sealed entrance, and chipped my way through the concrete with a sledgehammer. It was slow going, but we had no jackhammers on the island.

Inside, I made my way down a ladder, through an infinity of spiderwebs, and got to work.

The parts for my device were scavenged from offices downtown. I already had most of them, servers and cabling and sensors and...

There was one thing missing. A programmable switch. After my earlier scavenging efforts, I had a pretty good idea where to go for it.
