526 The Flood, Ch. 38
Chapter Thirty-eight
Sunny didn't know about my project, Dozer doesn't like the water, or boats, and Princess is basically useless as a guard dog, so I headed out alone. Instead of taking the big boat, I took my dinghy, figuring it would be stealthier.
We left just after dark. The moon was setting, giving us an ebb tide to ride.
From the shore of Eureka Harbor, I sailed east on the dying breeze of the afternoon. We rounded the tip of the island, the newly named Buena Vista Bluff, and headed for the hulking towers downtown.
At the General Digital headquarters, I knew exactly where the switches were located. But my building was gone, and all of the equipment with it.
So I headed for our competitor, Golly Delight. Their GD logo was an intentional ripoff of ours, and trust me, I sued the crap out of them over it, but they were a bunch of snakes, and paid off the right people. We had to settle out of court. Ultimately, I wound up changing our logo.
Their products sucked, they had a red headed character named Sanio who tried to be as sexy as Sonia Red, but wound up making you feel dirty, pervy but not in a fun way. Like you had issues.
Still, I hoped their copycat tendencies included the equipment they used to make it all work, because my project required the best.
Sadly for them, and fortunately for me, their headquarters were a dumpy fifteen or twenty story squat little beast. They stood strong during the flood, taking heavy water damage on the lower floors, with only the uppermost levels retaining their glass.
As I approached, I watched for any signs of life. But all I saw was starlight twinkling in reflection off the C-suites.
