552 accidental breakthroughs

Here's another Bike & Battery coming at you. Above is the mini-Murf, we ran a photo of one in the last issue. This style of BMX size ebike looks really fun, but would it get tired to always be stuck on a kid size bike?

Then here's the new self-driving ebike that's been getting some headlines, the EV-B.

If you have been following a while, you know self-driving ebikes are a passion idea around here.

The future is now-ish. Really. Here's another "self-driver."

The DaVinci DC100. Also on pre-order. Think it's going to be around $20k, tho.

Back to actual bikes...

Another contender in the "hunting bike" category, the Eunorau Defender S. AWD through two 750 watt hubs. Can be specced with two 17Ah 48v batteries.

Kinda full suspension survival MTB looking. Would be fun to test ride one!

And into the exciting world of electricity. Check out the graph above. Coal and oil are going away as far as electricity generation goes, displaced by natural gas and, um, nukes?

And here we see that among battery makers, Japan and South Korea are losing out to China. The USA is in that grey square of the 8% "other."

Definitely room to grow our share!

This week I've run into two stories about science breakthroughs that have sort of happened by accident. In the story above, scientists learned that they could charge a battery faster just by heating it up. It worked. Warm batteries, coming soon to an EV near you.

Then saw another experiment where scientists are attempting to separate hydrogen from water. They had a power outage, and the lights went off for a bit but the experiment had backup power. Still, they noticed the results were diminished for the time when the lights were out. Voila, a breakthrough. Light enhances the hydrogen extraction process. Voila, glowing light effects, coming soon to a fuel cell vehicle near you.

Enjoy your day.
